Many small business owners tell me they are reluctant to send out email newsletters and mass mailings because every time they do they get a number of “unsubscribes.” I tell them that there are several reasons why your readers have unsubscribed. MOST of them have nothing to do with you! Getting unsubscribes from your mailing list is a good thing and here are some of the reasons why:
- If someone doesn’t want to receive your message (for whatever reason), then you don’t want to keep sending it to them. Giving them a chance to opt out is important–and it’s the law.
- They may have signed up for your list twice using two different email addresses (a I often do). In which case your list of 500 people is really only a list of 499 — until you count the 25 others who did the same thing. You could go through each email and remove the duplicates yourself, OR, you could let your subscribers clean up you list for you! (I prefer the latter)
- Things change. Someone who signed up to receive your mailings may have changed their minds and are no longer interested. Do you really want to keep filling up their inbox if they no longer have interest in your products or service? I didn’t think so.
- It’s normal. If you are using email lists to build your marketing and sales funnel you are going to have people unsubscribe. Every internet marketer will tell you this. This number is not one you should be paying attention to. The real numbers to look at are open rate and click throughs. If you aren’t getting those you need to do something about it.
So get your mailings out on schedule and don’t fear the unsubscribe!
